Pokemon annoying, but not without depth

This wildly popular game has seen tremendous success, moving from trading cards to television and video games. Nintendo DS released the latest offering to fans of the Pokemon universe this week.

Gameplay: “Pokemon Diamond” and “Pokemon Pearl” are simply two flavors of the same game with one major difference, now one of the world’s most popular games can be played with a stylus and a touch screen.

At it’s core, “Pokemon” is a role-playing game that lets players explore a fantasy world in hopes of finding rare and powerful animals called Pokemon. This is the exact same formula used by nearly every other “Pokemon” game, aside from the “Poke-themed” puzzle game “Trozei” and other spin-offs. This time, players will travel the world map following a cheesy storyline that involves out “Poke-battling” the evil “Team Galactic.” But as before, the real meat of these games lies in the ability to trade or battle with other live players.

Graphics/Sound: Graphically, there is nothing remarkable about “Diamond” or “Pearl.” It seems that a great deal of effort went into keeping the visuals and sound effects very much like those of all the previous titles. Everything looks and animates in a way that will be very familiar to fans of the series. Lowdown: These new Pokemon role-playing games, “Diamond” and “Pearl” offer some significant improvements over previous titles. The touch screen controls make game play seem more accessible, and the built-in wi-fi of the Nintendo DS makes trading and battling with friends a snap.
