Hearts for Hope Santa Claus will be the guest of honor at the Hearts for Hope Breakfast With Santa fundraiser Sunday at the Ridge Country Club in Chicago. Toys for Tots at Webb Webb Chevrolet in Oak Lawn is a drop-off point for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots collection program. Sertoma coat drive The need grows greater for individuals with disabilities who do not have the funds to purchase a warm coat this winter or a family to provide for them. Melanie Jones, director of Advancement and Communications at Sertoma Centre, purchases the coats required each year. “This year the need has grown to 29 individuals without a winter coat,” she said. Sertoma Centre is a not-for-profit agency that provides services to over 625 individuals with developmental, physical and emotional disabilities, and/or mental illness. Sheriff’s coat drive Heavy summer rains that caused flooding in the basements of some buildings at the Cook County Jail destroyed dozens of boxes of women’s coats and clothing that were to be distributed to women leaving rehabilitative programs at the jail and beginning new lives. Throughout November, the Cook County sheriff’s office will collect gently used coats, gloves, hats and clothing of all sizes, which will be provided to women leaving programs with the Cook County Sheriff’s Department of Women’s Justice Services. Established in 1999, the program offers gender-responsive programs for women focused on rehabilitation, job training and treatment programs which are aimed at ensuring a more successful re-entry to their community and reunification with their family after time in jail. During November, all sizes of gently used coats and clothing will be accepted at drop boxes located in the lobby of each of the Cook County Court buildings in Skokie, Rolling Meadows, Maywood, Bridgeview, Markham and the Daley Center downtown.

Remember veterans The third annual Veteran’s Christmas Party and Gift Drive will take place at 4 p.m. Dec. 12 at St. Joseph and St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 2453 Oak St. (at Greenwood), Blue Island. Though many veterans return to a joyful Christmas reunion with family and friends, many others are returning from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars with serious physical disabilities, post-traumatic stress disorder and other emotional wounds. They may spend long months in the VA hospital away from family and loved ones. Some may join the vast numbers of homeless vets surviving on the streets, with no family to care for them at all. Those who attend the Dec. 12 party are asked to bring Christmas gifts and warm clothes for hospitalized and homeless veterans. Free bag of food New Mercies Community Services was organized in 2003 to provide support services to low-income, elderly and disabled families in south Cook County. The organization operates a food pantry in Midlothian that distributes bags of food twice weekly to this same targeted population. Help soldiers call home “Cell Phones for Soldiers” was started by two teenagers to help buy calling cards to send to U.S. military stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan and throughout the world. They are collecting old cell phones and accessories. The cell phones are recycled for cash and proceeds used to buy the calling cards for the soldiers. “Cell Phones for Soldiers” has raised almost $2 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas. XXXXXXx Hold until further notice Shelter needs furniture The Sanctuary, a transitional housing program for homeless women and children is seeking furniture donations. The program is a holistic approach to providing transitional housing and comprehensive supportive services to homeless women with dependent children. Transitional housing is the intermediate step between emergency shelter and independent living that is often necessary for the homeless. Furniture donations such as couches, easy chairs, twin mattresses, dressers, lamps, kitchen sets, high chairs, lamps, coffee and end tables are in particular need at this time. It is requested that items be in reasonably clean condition with no broken parts. The Sanctuary is a program supported by South Suburban Family Shelter, which provides comprehensive services to families who experience domestic violence.
