Animal shelter change likely

The trip was part of a fact-finding mission that could lead to an overhaul of operations at the Lake County Animal Control Center.

The center has been criticized recently for its high rate of euthanizations and low pet adoptions.

Blanchard said the animal control center is comparable with any other government facility that operates on a shoestring budget.

But, he said, “we have to broaden the center’s scope.” Scheub said he wants the center to move to the next level where adoptions are commonplace and hundreds of volunteers are involved in the care of impounded animals.

County officials want to shift the center to the sheriff’s jurisdiction, but a final decision will not be made until September, Dominguez said. this web site michigan humane society

The sheriff is waiting for a response from the county’s legislative bodies to his proposals seeking a higher budget and a larger building for the animal control center.

Dominguez said an expanded county animal care and control center could also offer a variety of services, including classes for pet owners.

Donations from the public would help offset the cost of an expanded animal control center, Dominguez said.

“The community will rally behind a facility that focuses on adoptions rather than euthanasia,” he said.
