Classes, tutors provide help before the SAT

If you’re taking the SAT on May 1 or June 5, you should start preparing now. Buying those heavy prep books at bookstores can be beneficial if you’re extremely self-motivated. But for the rest of us who need a bigger push, there is help.
Taking an SAT prep class — if you find a good fit — can be a good investment in your future.
Roanoke County schools offer an SAT prep program on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There are six sessions, and the total cost is $100. If you prefer one-on-one teaching, Huntington Learning Center or other private tutors might suit you best. It’s a bit more pricey (prices vary depending on how much help you require or request). go to website huntington learning center
Huntington tests you with previous SAT material to see what you need to work on, and then private tutors work with you on problems and discuss strategies and shortcuts. The class is two times a week, for two hours each time.
Andrew Strauss, a senior at Patrick Henry, took SAT tutoring with Maggie McDaniel, a professor at Virginia Western Community College. Like Huntington, the class provided one-on-one help. It focused more on the English portion of the SAT.
“I thought it was a nice change to go from learning in a big classroom to learning one-on-one. When it came to my SAT scores, the class helped significantly,” he said.
Many tutors will work with your schedule and plan as many sessions as you need.
