Mold means misery.

American News (Aberdeen, SD) August 2, 2007 Byline: Angela Mettler Aug. 2–ELSIE WELLS IS LUCKY — she has not had a mold problem in her basement after it was partially flooded in early May.

But many Aberdeen residents did, and most cleaned the mold out. Some, however, have not, increasing their risk of developing health problems.

People can come in contact with mold through the skin or by inhaling or ingesting mold spores. People with respiratory conditions, allergies, asthma or weakened immune systems should avoid mold cleanup if possible or ask a doctor for advice, according to the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. website ammonia and bleach

People who are allergic to mold will immediately experience terrible nasal stuffiness, sneezing, itchy eyes and possibly asthma, said Dr. Thomas Luzier of Aberdeen Asthma and Allergy.

Other people might experience a reaction hours after they are exposed to mold, he said.

For example, if a person goes into a moldy environment around 3 p.m. on a given day, he or she could develop flu-like symptoms and possibly a cough around midnight, Luzier said.

People who are constantly exposed to mold will have more vague symptoms, including sinus infections, nasal congestion and poor sleep, he said.

“They just don’t feel good,” he said.

According to the CDC, mold can be seen, sometimes as a discoloration, and smell musty or earthy. It grows in warm, moist areas.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, mold growth can develop within 24 to 48 hours of water exposure.

Aspergillus is the most common type of mold, and is usually black or dark, sometimes gray or green, Luzier said. The conditions in which it grows make it dangerous to humans. site ammonia and bleach

“It grows optimally at the same temperature as your lung,” Luzier said.

If someone inhales mold spores and the spores start growing in the lungs, the person will cough, be extremely fatigued and have asthma-like symptoms, he said.

Certain types of mold can also produce carcinogens, or cancer-causing agents, but those types are not usually found indoors or on building materials, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Luzier said keeping a basement door closed will reduce the chance that mold will spread through the air into other parts of a house.

Removing mold from and cleaning a moldy area will help prevent health issues.

The CDC recommends wearing a mask to avoid inhaling mold spores and wearing gloves made from natural rubber, neoprene, nitrile, polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride to prevent mold and cleaning solutions from contact with skin.

The EPA recommends wearing goggles without ventilation holes to keep mold and mold spores from contact with eyes while cleaning.

According to the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service, moldy areas can be disinfected by applying a solution of 1/4 cup of chlorine bleach per 1 gallon of water to the surface and keeping the surface wet with the solution for 10 to 15 minutes. Then the solution should be allowed to dry naturally for six to eight hours.

When cleaning, never mix ammonia and bleach because the fumes from the mixture can be fatal, according to the CDC.

Then, patience is key — after the moldy area is clean, it might take weeks or months for conditions to be dry enough to begin repair, according to the Extension Service.
