GOVERNOR TURNS LIGHT OFF ON THE CALIFORNIA DREAM.
States News Service October 1, 2010 SACRAMENTO, CA — The following information was released by California State Senator Gilbert Cedillo: californiadreamactnow.com california dream act
Cedillo’s SB 1460 will not enlighten a generation of students with an education Senator Gilbert Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) issues the following statement on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s veto of the California Dream Act (SB 1460):
“On behalf of all the AB 540 students in California I am deeply disappointed in the Governor’s veto of the California Dream Act, especially after all the time we have spent working to address his concerns. I introduced this bill five years ago and since that time we have created a coalition of supporters which includes the LA Chamber of Commerce, the University of California, the California State University and the California Community Colleges. It saddens me that the governor has chosen to further limit access to higher education for these exceptional students who have worked so hard to achieve the dream of a college degree and a better life. see here california dream act
We are short of doctors, nurses, engineers and others. Our leader’s vision must include the future. These young people have the opportunity to be that workforce and in California around 20,000 students would have benefited from this legislation.
California High School graduates who have been accepted to our premier public colleges and universities confront difficult challenges in financing their college education. We must support their future and our economy.
Each of the three higher education systems (CSU, UC, CCC), the California Student Aid Commission, which is the agency responsible for administering state financial aid and several of the largest business groups in the state including the Los Angeles and San Francisco Chambers of Commerce and the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce supported the California Dream Act.
