Langley has cautioned against a scheme put forward by the Hurunui District Council. Under the local government’s proposal, facilities judged to benefit from tourism, such as hotels, garages and dairies, will pay special rates. The Council plans to use the rates to fund its local tourism initiatives. Langley says the charging of targeted rates is akin to a bed tax.
