A doggone endorsement for tasty canine treats.(Neighbor)

Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL) August 9, 2001 Byline: Sammi King This could be the next round of reality TV – pets doing food shows. Maybe it won’t happen on the Food Network or on Animal Planet, but it happened in Batavia.

Ellie, the formerly naughty but now sweet, bearded collie who has taken over our household, recently celebrated her first birthday. For a special birthday treat, I took her downtown to the Batavia Farmers’ Market last Saturday. At the market was Jody Hart with her new venture, W.A.G.S. dog treats. homemadedogtreatsnow.com homemade dog treats

Ellie was ecstatic to participate in a W.A.G.S. product sampling, sitting patiently while Hart put two different samples in front of her. With tail wagging, Ellie gobbled up both samples in one bite, a testament to the secret recipe that Hart uses for her dog treats.

Ellie was quickly added to the list of satisfied customers who gave the product a four-paw rating.

Hart’s friends and neighbors (who own dogs) are familiar with W.A.G.S. dog treats. She has been giving them away for years. She has provided them for the J.B. Nelson Fun Fair and for the Blessing of the Animals service at her church, Calvary Episcopal.

“I started giving them away when we lost our dog, Winston,” Hart said. “It was a way to stay connected and to do something in his memory. We had him for 13 1/2 years. He was like a child to us.” Friends urged her to try to market the dog snacks.

“I really wanted to start to sell them at the beginning of the summer but mom delays got in the way,” Hart said. “I guess I need to work on my time management.” W.A.G.S. stands for Winston’s All-time Greatest Snack. The snacks come in cheese and peanut butter. According to Hart’s son, Thomas, people like the cheese and dogs like the peanut butter. go to website homemade dog treats

“Do people eat these snacks?” I asked.

“One man did try them and then he bought them,” she answered.

Hart was quick to reassure me that the homemade dog treats are made from healthy ingredients: whole wheat, chicken broth, vanilla. Her young son, Jeffrey, immediately put a stop to the conversation -“Don’t tell your secret recipe.” “He’s just her son. I’m her assistant,” Thomas added.

The whole family is involved in this new venture. Husband Mark did all of the graphics for the business. He has a marketing background and it shows in the packaging and the signs. But Jody Hart is the one who really makes this business work.

Her love of dogs shows in her product and in her presentation. She offers free water for her customers, the dogs. She comes around the table and greets them, giving them a sample of the product. As she talks with you, her eyes are on the dog, smiling eyes filled with love. It may sound schmaltzy, but it’s true.

Ellie looks up at her and smiles. Yes, dogs do smile.

Visiting the W.A.G.S. booth at the farmers’ market is a like a trip to doggy heaven. Winston must be looking down with love.
