AIR TRAVELER WANTS REVIEW OF DELTA FARES.(NEWS)

The Cincinnati Post (Cincinnati, OH) February 26, 2000 A Cincinnati activist is renewing his plea that the U.S. Department of Justice investigate Delta Air Lines’ fares at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Ahron Leichtman, a Delta frequent flyer, complained in a letter sent Friday to an assistant attorney general that low-cost carriers can’t compete with Delta’s hub at Cincinnati.

More than 90 percent of the passengers at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International fly Delta or Comair, which Delta recently bought.

Leichtman’s letter was in response to Vanguard Airlines’ decision to discontinue service at the airport, effective next Thursday. Vanguard offered discount flights to Chicago but couldn’t compete with other airlines, company officials said. Vanguard was the only discount carrier at the airport. site delta frequent flyer

Delta and Comair officials have said they didn’t engage in predatory pricing to drive Vanguard out of the market.

But Leichtman believes Delta’s hold on the Cincinnati market deserves a federal investigation. His letter also blames the Kenton County Airport Board for not doing enough to aggressively seek new carriers.

”With its more than cozy relationship with Delta . . . the Kenton County Airport Board has not had the best interests of air travelers based in the tri-state region in mind,” his letter says.

Airport spokesman Ted Bushelman said officials from Cincinnati, the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and the airport constantly talk to discount airlines. Another recruiting mission is scheduled for next week, although Bushelman wouldn’t say which airline the group will visit. site delta frequent flyer

Ten discount airlines have tried and failed to make it here in the last 14 years, Bushelman said. Last year, Leichtman asked the Department of Justice to investigate Delta’s pricing at Cincinnati. He received a thank-you letter in reply.
